ROLE: GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS DESIGNER
(BUILDING INTERACTION PROTOTYPE)

STATUS: EARLY SYSTEMS PROTOTYPE

RoboRail is an early survival gameplay prototype developed in Unreal Engine, exploring how spatial constraints and resource interaction can influence player decision-making within a train-based environment. The project focused on testing foundational survival systems and evaluating how limited mobility spaces shape pacing and player strategy.

This prototype served as an initial exploration into systemic gameplay structures that informed later design directions in subsequent projects.

DESIGN FOCUS

Key design priorities included:

  • Exploring survival pacing within a constrained train environment.

  • Testing early building interaction mechanics tied to fixed spatial locations.

  • Evaluating player movement decisions under environmental limitation.

  • Establishing foundational gameplay loops for resource-based progression.

RESPONSIBILITIES

My contributions included:

  • Designed and implemented a rudimentary building interaction system within Unreal Engine.

  • Structured fixed placement logic for buildable elements on the train.

  • Designed tutorial guidance flow including timing and integration of voice-over cues.

  • Supported gameplay prototyping through layout iteration and interaction testing.

SYSTEMS DESIGN APPROACH

RoboRail was conceptualized as an early investigation into how spatial restriction can influence survival gameplay. The prototype emphasized evaluating how players make decisions when movement options and environmental interaction opportunities are limited.

The building system was designed around permanent placement zones to simplify interaction logic while allowing assessment of how environmental modification affects player progression. This approach enabled focused testing of systemic pacing without the complexity of fully modular construction mechanics.

Additionally, tutorial voice-over cues were integrated to guide early player understanding of interaction systems and environmental navigation.

PROTOTYPE OUTCOME

Insights gained from RoboRail helped establish a clearer understanding of how constrained environments can support survival tension and structured player progression. The project provided a foundation for exploring more advanced systemic implementations in later gameplay prototypes.
