ABOUT THE PROJECT

You are a dog that’s now lost in space. You must find your way back to your home planet, Earth, by traversing the vastness of the multiverse, dodging obstacles, all the while making sure to not drift into the vast reaches of outer space. Navigate Johnny with a simple tap, making him move in the direction he is facing.

Fresh from Game Jam 2018, I decided to use the mechanics I had learned to create in the Game Jam game, Boosted, and make a more story-oriented one-touch mechanic game, much like Boosted, but more challenging. The result? Space Pooch!

POST MORTEM

What Went Right:

  • As I had started this project right after my first game jame (Global Game Jam BLR 2018), I was able to replicate the player mechanics I had implemented in the game jam game (Boosted)

  • I was lucky enough to be able to find all the assets I needed to make the prototype version of this game for free on various sites like OpenGameArt.

  • Another thing that went right because of all this was being able to build the proof of concept version for this game. And I was able to build it in lesser time than I had initially aimed for.

What Went Wrong:

  • Adding the challenge mechanics (the mechanics that would make it a challenge for the players) was something that I still struggled with. This was possibly because I hadn't taken the time to get myself more acquainted with how Unity works and how to build mechanics using C# and scriptable objects in Unity.

  • Having built the proof of concept in as little time as I had, I set out to further enhance the player experience. Despite feeling confident in my skills at the time and setting deadlines for completing certain tasks, I still overshot my time and went beyond the target deadline with no output in sight, even then.

  • Many times after completing the proof of concept, I also found myself wanting to add more to the already set scope.
